NYC Bike Count Continues Upward Trend in 2010 With 13 Percent Growth

Here is an interesting article on streetblog.org about how the number of cyclist in the center of NYC is rapidly increasing in the last years. To me the recent years look like an exponential growth and it is probably due to the increase of infrastructure in certain parts of the city which makes bike use so much more easy and save. Lets hope we get some bike lanes here in Ditmas Park very soon. Several bike lanes from and to Prospect Park and to the Ocean would be great.

The Ditmas ♥ Rides will NOT happen this Friday (12/10) INSTEAD we are trying to go to the Transportation Alternatives Holiday Party (http://transalt.org/events/calendar/4909).

We hope you can join us for the 11th Annual Transportation Alternatives Holiday Party! We will be traveling together meting between 6:30 and 7pm There will be music, snacks, drinks and some awesome raffle items. Complimentary drinks provided by Brooklyn Brewery and Cycles Gladiator Wines.
The party is at the Gallery Bar on 120 Orchard St and starts at 7pm
Members can buy their tickets in advance for $10. Non-Member can join at the The Holiday Party. Advance tickets can be bought online with your very own T.A. membership for $30 total. You can also buy tickets and memberships at the door for either $15 for Members or $36 to join as a member with free entry

City Will Crack Down on Scofflaw Cyclists

There is an interesting article in the New York times today about the City wanting Crack Down on Scofflaw Cyclists. What comes to my mind about this is that with enough bike friendly infrastructure in place most of the bicyclist won't have a reason anymore to flout the law because they would feel save on the streets and infractuture would not slow them down rather then allow them to travel at a comfortable speed.

Dress up for our Halloween Ride

Dress up yourself, dress up your bike and come to our next Ditmas ♥ Rides this Friday (10/29) at 7:00 pm. Of course you can join us if you our your bike are not dressed up.

We will meet in front of the Qathra @ on Cortelyou between Stratford and Westminster.

The purpose of the Ditmas Rides is for us to have fun and to celebrate and spread a way of getting around we already enjoy. There is no planned route and we the participants will decide where we would like to go shortly before the ride starts. Ditmas Park has a lot of small streets so hopefully we can have a joyful and stress free rides. I myself are planning to bring my daughter Nona Lily along and hope that other parents will bring their children as well.

A good store to get for getting supply to dress up yourself or your bike is Michaels in Manhattan. Let me know if you know any good local arts and crafts stores or have any other tips here to get Halloween supply. Thanks, Rene

If you have yet to experience the Victorian-lined streets of Ditmas Park, let these dedicated locals give you the grand tour by bike. Every Friday, the group meets up at the Egyptian coffee shop Qathra for a leisurely, play-it-by-ear evening ride. The tradition was started by neighborhood parents teaching their kids to ride their bikes, but has expanded to include residents and Ditmas-curious visitors of all ages. Invited guests often stop by to show off specialty bikes, like the cargo-ready Bullit or elegant Pendersen.
Fridays at 7pm, free.

Here some photos from our frist "Ditmas Rides" ride

The fist Ditmas Ride happened on a Friday May 14th 2010. Ditmas Ride came out of a series of bike rides I organized the year before which was called "kids on bikes". Its purpose was to help people find way to get around with their kids on a bike. As a result we try to keep the Ditmas Ride as kid friendly as possible and still try to introduce people to ways how they can transport their kids on a bike. There for the Ditmas Ride is no way a competitive ride rather then a leisurely ride which would like to facilitate meeting other bicyclist and enjoying each other company. We welcome all kinds of riders. Especially new once. If you'd like to offer a ride at a different time of the day or on a different day. Please let us know. We will be happy to pass out the word.
